Florida Gators Football: Jordan Sherit To Miss SEC Championship Game
Florida Gators defensive lineman Jordan Sherit left the Florida State game with a knee injury. Head coach Jim McElwain gave an update on Sherit’s status.
The Florida Gators have been ravaged by injuries to players on both ends of the ball. That list includes, and sadly isn’t limited to, starting quarterback Luke Del Rio and vocal defensive leader Jarrad Davis.
Unfortunately, the Gators will be without another key player during the 2016 SEC Championship Game against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Atlanta.
Jordan Sherit has started seven of Florida’s 10 games and become one of its most valuable players. Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury against the Florida State Seminoles and was forced to leave the game.
Head coach Jim McElwain confirmed that the worst case scenario has come to fruition: Sherit will miss the SEC Championship Game and will require surgery on his knee.
That’s a devastating blow.
For all that’s been said about the loss to Florida State, the Gators have no business being in the SEC Championship Game. Florida has lost its starting quarterback, two starting linebackers, both starting safeties, and both starting defensive ends to injury.
Yet, Florida continues to rank in the Top 10 in most defensive statistics and will play in the SEC Championship Game.
Against Alabama, Florida will be without Sherit and Bryan Cox Jr.—the two starting defensive ends. It also expects to be without starting linebackers Alex Anzalone and Jarrad Davis, and starting safeties Marcus Maye and Nick Washington.
To make matters worse, starting quarterback Luke Del Rio and starting center Cameron Dillard are also expected to miss the Alabama game.
Despite that absurdly long list of injuries, Florida is No. 6 in the country in yards allowed per game and No. 5 in scoring defense. It’s played true freshmen and a number of players who never expected to see the field in 2016.
The question is: can the Gators survive yet another injury?
One way or another, I wish the best of luck to Jordan Sherit on his road to recovery.
