FIU football player done for season after allegedly being doused with boiling water

Florida International University tight end Jonnu Smith will miss the remainder of the 2016 season after a bizarre incident with his girlfriend that left him severely burned.

Smith, a senior whose career at FIU is essentially over because of the incident, allegedly suffered the burns when his pregnant girlfriend threw boiling water on him on Halloween, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald.

Mary Gaspar was charged with aggravated battery, and Smith is recovering from “severe burns on his head, neck, back, a shoulder and an arm.” Here is Gaspar’s account of the incident, per The Herald:

The two argued through the day over the attention Smith was paying her and their relationship. While in Smith’s dorm room and “feeling extremely emotional and stressed,” she told police, she boiled a pot of water. Then, she walked over to Smith and poured it on him.

When Smith didn’t react strongly enough for her, she started hitting him with her open hands, she told police.

In nine games this season, Smith has 39 receptions for 441 yards and three touchdowns. In his four seasons at FIU, he has caught 175 passes for 1,936 yards and 17 TDs. He is considered a possible late-round pick in the NFL Draft this spring.
