Once again the Aggies are the talk of college football following the first week of the season, but this time feels different, as it was the defense leading the way for Texas A&M in their big opening season win.

The main man behind that defense, new coordinator John Chavis, spoke to reporters this week to review the victory over Arizona State and talk about the defensive overhaul that is currently underway in College Station.

Without taking the glory for himself, Chavis credited the player's effort as the key to victory over the weekend.

“We grade effort even tougher than we do technique,” Chavis said. “We have (three) grades. If there’s a loaf, if what you do is acceptable, and the third grade is if it’s above and beyond. We had a few loafs in the game. Not very many, but the exceptional effort plays out-weighed the loafs.

“Our guys flew around and played hard. That’s what we’re going to expect them to do, that’s what they expect to do, and it’s an example of them responding to what we ask and teach every day.”
