Boykin didn't live up to hype in opener, but there's a long way to go
Heisman Trophy candidates are supposed to be perfect if not superhuman, and when they're not the criticism is going to come.
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin, a frontrunner to win the 2015 Heisman, didn't have his best game in the Horned Frogs' season-opening 23-17 win at Minnesota. On Tuesday, the shaky performance left TCU at No. 3 in the AP Top 25 poll, down a notch from starting the season at No. 2.
Boykin could have reversed the story line, but he missed two wide-open receivers for would-be touchdowns that allowed the game to stay close. He finished 26 of 42 passing for 246 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a touchdown while leading the team with 92 rushing yards.
"He missed some easy throws that could have been touchdowns,” Patterson told the Star-Telegram. "But he checked into an option play and ran it in — which is pure athletic ability — for a touchdown."
Boykin has an opportunity to put up some monster numbers over the next two weeks when TCU plays at home against Stephen F. Austin and then SMU, before traveling to Texas Tech, a team the Frogs hung 82 on a year ago.
