Andre Jones scored 15 points and Winthrop defeated Appalachian State 65-63 on Saturday. Donald Sims gave Appalachian State a 62-60 lead on two free throws with 56 seconds left in the game. Jones then hit a go ahead 3-pointer with 36 seconds left for the Eagles (9-18). Mantoris Robinson hit two free throws with 5 seconds remaining to put Winthrop ahead by three points. The Mountaineers (11-16) had a chance to send the game into overtime when Marcus Wright was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 1 second to play. But Wright made one of his three foul-line attempts. Appalachian State finished the game shooting 58.8 percent from the free-throw line (20 of 34). Charles Corbin scored 11 points and Justin Burton added 10 for the Eagles. Sims led the Mountaineers with 18 points and Josh Hunter added 11.
