Welage leads San Jose State over Idaho 58-49

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) Ryan Welage scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds and San Jose State held off a late run by Idaho to win 58-49 on Tuesday night.

Trailing by 36-22 at halftime, Idaho twice closed to within a point before tying it at 47 on Nate Sherwood's free throw with 6:10 left. Brandon Clarke and Jaycee Hillsman each made layups and the Spartans pulled ahead. Idaho closed to 52-49 on Arkadiy Mkrtychyan's layup, but Clarke hit a jumper and Hillsman made two free throws with 46 seconds left.

Jalen James iced it with two free throws down the stretch.

Hillsman scored 11 points, Clarke added nine with a career-high six blocks, and the Spartans (3-3) controlled the offensive boards 13-9, getting 13 second-chance points to Idaho's three.

Idaho shot 34 percent from the floor (18 of 53) to the Spartans' 31.3 percent (20 of 64).

Victor Sanders led Idaho (3-3) with 15 points.
