Freshman D.J. Covington tied a school record with nine blocks and Virginia Military Institute defeated Southern Virginia 94-78 on Tuesday night.

The win moved the Keydets to 5-0 for the first time since 1921-22.

Covington, who also had 13 points and nine rebounds, tied Eric Mann's mark set against The Citadel on Jan. 15, 2000.

VMI jumped out to a 55-25 lead at halftime behind nine 3-pointers.

Nick Gore finished with four 3-pointers and 14 points for the Keydets, who were 11 of 45 from long range (24.4 percent).

Stan Okoye scored 17, Austin Kenon 15, Burks 12 and Gabriel 11 for VMI. Gabriel's first 3-pointer at the 8:47 mark put him over 1,000 points for his career.

Anders Jacobson led the Knights (2-5) with 25 points. Spenser Briggs and Casey Nye added 16 and 10 points, respectively, for the NAIA school.
