Versatile Gabriel is Auburn's "stat sheet stuffer"

Kenny Gabriel is Auburn's shot-blocker, fast-break finisher, 3-point shooter and best rebounder.

The 6-foot-8, 209-pounder has been the top player for the struggling Tigers this season, mainly because he plays so many roles.

''He's the do-all guy. He's what I call the stat sheet stuffer for this team,'' coach Tony Barbee said before rattling off a list of contributions that proves his point.

''He's a guy that, whether it's scoring, blocking shots, rebounding, assists, steals, charges, he does it all. He's that kind of versatile player, and those are hard to find in today's game. That's what makes him good. He doesn't do anything necessarily great, but he does a lot of things really, really well.''

Gabriel will play his final home game for Auburn (14-15, 4-11 Southeastern Conference) on Saturday against LSU, finishing a career that has produced some highlight-reel plays if not big numbers or a bunch of wins.

Barring a run to the SEC tournament title next week, the junior college transfer will finish his three-year Auburn stay without making it to the NCAA tournament or NIT.

Gabriel has carved multiple niches on a team that doesn't really have a go-to scorer or a dominant big man.

He posted Auburn's first triple-double against Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 2 with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocks - all career highs.

Gabriel is the No. 2 scorer with 12.1 points per game and top rebounder (7.7) and his average of 2.3 blocks is tied for second in the SEC. He also ranks second on the team with 32 steals and 38 made 3-pointers.

''He does everything,'' Tigers center Rob Chubb said. ''He's always in the right place. It doesn't happen that much just by luck, so he's got a really good knack for where things are about to happen.

''He can see stuff start to unfold so he gets to the right spots. He's where he's got to be to make plays and get balls that other people can't get, because he can just jump out of the building. When he gets his lobs in transition, it gets the crowd going for us and that just gets our momentum going. He's like a motivation with his dunks and with some of the deep 3s he hits, then coming down to dunk on somebody.''

In fact, Chubb said he has found himself getting a little time to sneak peeks at replays shortly after plenty of Gabriel special plays.

''After somebody just gets hammered on by him, usually the other team calls timeout,'' Chubb said.

Gabriel said he doesn't consider himself a stat-sheet stuffer. But when asked what the best part of his game is, he answers with a bemused ''I don't know'' before citing his ability to get into high gear in transition even when he's fatigued.

''I just think most of the time I'll be in the right spot at the right time - I'll get a steal here, I get a block here and there, try to grab a rebound, try and score the ball a little bit,'' Gabriel said. ''I just try to do what I can just to help my team win.''
