VCU takes over 1st place in the A-10; beats Davidson 70-60
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Mo Alie-Cox scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Virginia Commonwealth cruised to a 70-60 win over Davidson on Senior Night and took over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference when Saint Joseph's was knocked off by St. Bonaventure Wednesday night.
VCU and Saint Joseph's entered play tied for first with two games remaining. The Rams close out the regular season Saturday against Dayton.
The Rams took an 11-point lead at intermission and maintained a double digit advantage throughout the second half.
Melvin Johnson finished with 16 points and Justin Tillman added 11 points off the bench to pace VCU (22-8, 14-3).
Jack Gibbs scored 18 points and Peyton Aldridge contributed another 15 for Davidson (17-11, 9-8).
The top two seeds in the A-10 earn byes into the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament and would play March 11.
