UNC Basketball: Tar Heels blow past Chattanooga
Another game, another UNC win as the Tar Heels beat the Mocs in their home opener on Sunday
Two games through and the North Carolina Tar Heels have two wins to start the 2016-17 college basketball season.
Coming off a big win over Tulane on Friday, the Tar Heels followed it up with a 40-point win over Chattanooga on Sunday. UNC struggled a bit early but turned it on towards the end of the first half.
The Tar Heels used a 21-7 run at the end of the first half to take a 44-33 lead into halftime. In the second half, it was all Tar Heels.
UNC had six players score in double-digits, led by Joel Berry’s 18 points.
The guard has now turned in a 23 and 18 point games on the young season for the Tar Heels. His double-digit scoring game was joined by Kennedy Meeks (14), Isaiah Hicks (13) Tony Bradley Jr. (12) and Justin Jackson (10).
The freshman Bradley Jr. has been everything and more he was advertised to be, giving a nice boost to the Tar Heels front court.
Arguably the difference in the game was UNC’s front court as they dominated in the paint. The Tar Heels out-rebounded the Mocs 51-32 in the game.
UNC’s defense turned in a nice performance as well. As the Mocs kept it close by shooting 55 percent as a team in the first half, UNC put the clamps down in the second half as they held them to 36 percent from the field.
Part of that defensive shut down came from senior guard Nate Britt who got the start on Sunday.
Williams made the decision to start Britt over sophomore Kenny Williams, who got the start against Tulane and played well. Williams also had a nice game against the Mocs, so it will be interesting to see how the team handles the lineup moving forward.
For UNC, the win means a 2-0 start as they will take on Long Beach State on Tuesday in the Dean Dome. It was also their 100th win in home openers all-time. They have now won 84 of their last 86 home openers.
After taking on Long Beach State, the Tar Heels will head to Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Warriors in a late night/early AM game on Friday. They will then play in the Maui Invitational next week.
