UMBC holds on to beat Longwood 58-53

BALTIMORE (AP) Wayne Sparrow scored all six of Maryland-Baltimore County's points in the final minute and the Retrievers held on to beat Longwood 58-53, winning their first game of the season on Sunday.

With 2:26 left to play, Malcolm Brent hit a 3-pointer to give the Retrievers an eight-point advantage. Longwood responded with a steal, two offensive rebounds, and finally a long 3 to cut the difference to 52-47 with 1:46 left on the clock. Sparrow scored a basket and went 4 of 4 from the line to seal it.

Sparrow, Brent and Devarick Houston combined to score 47 of UMBC's 58 points. Brent led the Retrievers with nine points in the opening half, helping to tie the score at 27 at the break.

The Lancers (3-7) were coming off a week-long break for exams, having last played on Dec. 6 against Tennessee-Martin. They have lost six of their last seven matchups.
