UC Irvine holds off Santa Clara 58-55

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) Ioannis Dimakopoulos had 15 points, John Edgar Jr. added 13 and UC Irvine held off a late rally to beat Santa Clara 58-55 on Wednesday night.

The Anteaters (4-4) led 55-45 on Edgar's jumper with 7:06 left but missed four of their last five shots and had five turnovers while Santa Clara closed the deficit.

Jaron Martin capped UC Irvine's scoring on a pull-up jumper to make it 58-52 with 2:50 left. Jared Brownridge hit a 3-pointer for the Broncos' last points with 1:28 left.

Brownridge finished with 20 points to lead Santa Clara (3-5) but came up short on two 3-point attempts that would have tied it in the final minute.

Matt Hauser added 14 points and Jarvis Pugh scored 12 for the Broncos.

UC Irvine shot 54.5 percent from the field and had a 36-24 rebounding edge but committed 17 turnovers to Santa Clara's five.
