Texas Women Win 16th Straight; Set Stage for Baylor

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:13 p.m. ET

The Texas Longhorns Women’s Basketball team pulled out a close win over Kansas State on Saturday night.

Texas needed a strong finish from freshman sensation Joyner Holmes to beat Kansas State 63-58 in Austin. This extended the Longhorns’ winning streak to 16 overall and 12 in a row to start Big 12 play.

Now, the first Texas vs. Baylor matchup is finally here. It’s 12-0 vs. 12-0 on Monday night to decide first place in the Big 12 conference.

Texas Basketball Had To Be Tougher Than Kansas State

Texas needed a tough conference game before facing Baylor. And, they certainly got one from the Wildcats.

K-State repeatedly tied the game in the fourth quarter, but Joyner Holmes nailed two key lay-ups to take the lead for good with 40 seconds left.

Holmes finished with another monster statline of 21 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocked shots. She also threw in 4 turnovers and 4 personal fouls in 34 minutes.

Meanwhile, PG Brooke McCarty played 39 minutes. McCarty scored 11 points with 6 rebounds, but she only had 2 assists. Brooke made up for the lack of assists by going 2-3 on three-pointers.

There was a glaring problem at the free-throw line, which allowed K-State to hang around. The Horns shot less than 50 percent by going only 8-17.

Ultimately, the Texas Women got the win to set the stage for the biggest Big 12 conference game of the season on a quick turnaround.

Texas Visits Baylor For First Time

After beating Kansas State, the Lady Longhorns will travel to Waco to face the #2-ranked Baylor Bears on Monday night.

The last time Texas lost a game was against #1-ranked UConn in December. The Horns got some of the Huskies’ mojo, as they have ripped off 16 in a row building to the matchup against Baylor.

Baylor has wiped away opponents in Big 12 play, though, and Texas is on a 14-game losing streak against the Bears.

The last time Texas beat Baylor was March 7, 2010, when Gail Goestenkors was the head coach. Since Karen Aston took over in 2012, the Longhorns have come close to winning just one time. In February 2015, Texas lost by two points to the Bears in Austin. Every other game during the losing streak has been decided by double digits.

Texas wants to change all of that on Monday night. But, it will take the Longhorns’ best game of the season.

Karen Aston’s team has lost four times this year – all to Top 11 basketball teams Stanford, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and UConn. Now is the time to see if the lessons learned from those four early losses and the current 16-game winning streak will lead to a breakthrough road victory over Baylor.
