Tennessee State has promoted assistant Travis Williams to head coach as the Tigers' 16th head coach, replacing John Cooper who left for Miami (Ohio).

Athletic director Teresa Williams announced the promotion Friday.

The native of Tifton, Ga., was Cooper's assistant the past three seasons. That included going from just nine wins in the 2009-10 season to a 20-13 record this season, the best by any Tennessee State program since 1978-79 as the team's first winning season in 16 years.

That got the Tigers their third postseason appearance in Division I with a trip to the CollegeInsider.com tournament.

Williams' top priority had been recruiting, and Phillips says they are happy to keep Williams as their new head coach.
