STANFORD, Calif. (AP) More than a decade ago, Jerod Haase bought a home in Kansas and his mother shipped his belongings from Northern California.

There were trophies and souvenirs. There was also a box filled with recruiting letters. Among the 50 to 60 was one from Stanford coach Mike Montgomery.

As soon as Haase scheduled his interview for the Stanford basketball coaching job, he hustled to his basement in Birmingham, Alabama. That box was still there, and he gathered it for the Bay Area trip.

Now, the guard Montgomery felt got away is Stanford's new coach. The former UAB coach succeeds the fired Johnny Dawkins. Haase learned from the best. He played at Kansas for Roy Williams and later coached under him for 13 years with the Jayhawks and at North Carolina.
