South Carolina State beats Norfolk St. 67-65 in MEAC semis

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) Gabe McCray finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, and Ed Stephens hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to lead No. 3 seed South Carolina State to a 67-65 win over Norfolk State in the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday night.

Greg Mortimer scored 14, while Eric Eaves and Stephens had 11 points apiece for South Carolina State.

The Bulldogs (19-13) will face top-seeded Hampton (19-10), which they beat 67-62 in the lone regular-season meeting, in the championship game Saturday.

A 3-pointer by Mortimer put South Carolina State up nine with 5:22 to play, but Charles Oliver answered with a 3 that sparked a 12-2 run which gave Norfolk State (17-16) a 65-64 lead with 19 second left.

Stephens' free throws put the Bulldogs back on top and Jeff Short missed a short jumper with three seconds remaining.

D'Shon Taylor led the Spartans with 15 points.
