South Alabama pushes past Carroll 83-64

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) John Brown scored 22 points and Ken Williams added 18 as South Alabama defeated Carroll of the NAIA 83-64 Friday night.

Brown and Williams each sank four 3-pointers. The Jaguars finished 11 of 25 from deep and outrebounded Carroll 38-27. Barrington Stevens added 10 points and Abdul Lewis hauled in 10 rebounds, four on offense, for South Alabama in its season opener.

Oliver Carr led the Fighting Saints with 11 points and Jake Hollifield chipped in 10 with seven rebounds. Carroll shot efficiently, going 23 of 45 (51.1 percent), but made just one 3-pointer to the Jaguars' 11.

Carroll held a slim lead late in the first half, but a three-point play by Lewis along with a 3-pointer by Williams sparked a 12-1 South Alabama run to end the half.

The Fighting Saints cut the deficit to four before South Alabama pulled away and led by as much as 26.
