SDSU coach happy to move on, but rips NCAA

San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher had plenty to be happy about after Thursday’s 73-69 win over New Mexico State.

But he took a moment to switch gears after the game.

“I’m going to do something I never do: I’m going to complain about the NCAA process,” he said.

Fisher went on to explain that SDSU requested to return to California on Friday if they had lost. Meanwhile, Fisher, looking at his watch, pointed out that it was 11:10  p.m. PT  in Spokane, Wash., while he was doing his press conference, and said that the team he just beat had to be on a plane at 1 a.m. to go back home.

“It’s disgraceful — for the billions of dollars that we have here, for them not to find a way to accommodate these kids, the student athletes. You can’t tell me they couldn’t find charter planes (Friday). We can say we want to do all these things for the benefit of the student athletes, but you play a game like we did tonight and you get to the airport at 1 in the morning? Come on, come on.”

Fisher wasn’t done.

“I’d like to have everyone [from the NCAA] top-down administratively and tell them you’re going to ride home with that losing team. See what it’s like to get home at 5 a.m. … This should not happen. This is not right.”
