San Jose State beats Santa Clara 55-40

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Ryan Welage and Isaiah Nichols had 12 points each and San Jose State beat Santa Clara 55-40 to snap the Spartans' six-game losing streak to their Silicon Valley rival on Saturday night.

The Spartans (4-3) won their third straight and the Broncos (3-6) lost their fourth in a row. San Jose State scored the last four points of the first half and the first 14 of the second to pull away to a 42-26 lead with 14:15 left. Santa Clara got the deficit no closer than 12 from there.

San Jose State's last home win against Santa Clara was Dec. 1, 1996.

Santa Clara led by nine in the first half and had a 21-15 lead on Nate Kratch's jumper with 6:52 left in the period. The Broncos made only one of their next 20 attempts from the field.

Matt Hauser had 14 points and Jared Brownridge scored 11 for Santa Clara.
