San Diego State pulled off an upset in the College World Series on Friday night when first baseman Steven Pallares stole home plate to give the Aztecs a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning. They went on to defeat UC Santa Barbara — the No. 1 seed in the Lake Elsinore Regional and No. 13 overall seed in the tournament.

It was an outright steal, with Pallares getting a fantastic jump and simply beating the throw and tag.

And if there was any doubt as to who the MVP of the game was, Pallares also homered earlier in the night. He finished 3-for-3 and scored three of San Diego State’s four runs.

We saw Florida pull off a steal of home plate earlier this season, but that was on a well-executed trick play. Pallares beat his opponents with straight speed. You have to respect that.
