Sam Houston State survives to beat Lamar, 69-66
BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) Aurimas Majauskas scored 17 points and Jamal Williams made 4 of 4 at the free throw line in the final 16 seconds to seal Sam Houston State's 69-66 win over Lamar on Monday night.
Sam Houston State (12-11, 7-3 Southland Conference) held a 35-22 lead at halftime and 54-32 advantage after an Albert Almanza 3 with 14:13 left in the game. But Lamar (10-12, 2-8) slowly chipped away, cutting its deficit to seven (59-52) on a Kevin Booze 3-pointer and to one (65-64) on a Josh Nzeakor layup with 22 seconds left.
Williams then hit his first pair of free throws, and after Booze cut the Cardinals deficit to 67-66, Williams drilled another two for a three-point lead. Booze missed a 3 at the buzzer.
Jovante' Spivey had 14 points and Dakarai Henderson had 11 for the Bearkats.
Nzeakor, Nick Garth, and Dorian Chatman each had 12 points for Lamar.
