Steven Werner scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double in leading Sam Houston State over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 61-53 on Saturday.
Sam Houston State (10-15, 4-7 SCL) trailed by one with 6:07 remaining until a Werner layup gave the Bearkats a lead they would not relinquish. A minute and a half later, Sam Houston State commenced a 10-2 run to conclude the game.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-20, 3-8) trailed by as many as nine in the second half until rallying to lead 47-46 on a free throw by Terence Jones, who scored 16 points.
Konner Tucker scored 14 points and Darius Gatson added 10 for the Bearkats while Chris Hawkins-Mast led the Islanders in scoring with 17 points.
Sam Houston State's bench outscored the Islanders' 16-5.
