SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) Danny Hurley has signed a six-year contract at Rhode Island after leading the Rams to a 23-10 record and an NIT berth in his third season as coach.
The contract, signed Wednesday, will raise his compensation package from about $630,000 this season to a guaranteed $1 million by the 2017-18 season.
Hurley's base salary will remain at $300,000. The additional money will come in part from gate receipts, with any shortfall picked up by the URI Foundation.
There is a buyout clause in which Hurley would have to pay the school $500,000 to $1.2 million if he leaves during the contract.

Hurley had been mentioned as a possible candidate at St. John's, which instead hired Chris Mullin on Wednesday.
