North Carolina State assistant coach Bobby Lutz has been approached by officials at Virginia Tech to discuss the school's head-coaching vacancy, the Washington Post reported Friday.
Lutz was recently promoted to associate head coach at North Carolina State under Mark Gottfried, and had a successful run as head coach at UNC Charlotte for 12 seasons. He was 218-158 there and reached the NCAA tournament five times.
Virginia Tech is in the market for a new coach after firing Seth Greenberg Monday. Greenberg took the Hokies to the NCAA tournament just once in nine seasons in Blacksburg, and was let go after Virginia Tech went 16-17 and finished tied for last in the ACC this season.
VCU coach Shaka Smart is apparently not a candidate to replace Greenberg. The Post reported that Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver approached Smart this week about the job, but Smart is not interested in leaving VCU at this time. He has reportedly turned down jobs at North Carolina State and Illinois during the last two offseasons.
