A possible gun charge against Seton Hall point guard Jordan Theodore is being reviewed by the Essex County prosecutor's office.

Katherine Carter, the prosecutor's office spokeswoman, said a municipal judge in South Orange-Maplewood found probable cause on Tuesday that Theodore had unlawful possession of a weapon on school property.

SNY.tv had reported that the Englewood resident was being investigated for an incident after the Pirates' game against Villanova on Feb. 15. Carter said Wednesday that the prosecutor's office will review the case and decide whether to charge Theodore with the third-degree offense, which is punishable by up five years in prison if convicted.

Laura Wankel, the university's vice president of student affairs, issued a statement Wednesday night saying the school conducted an investigation into the matter and found ''no student in violation'' of university policy.

''The university takes seriously any report that potentially threatens the safety and well-being of our community,'' Wankel said.

The Pirates host No. 15 St. John's on Thursday night.

SNY.tv reported that Municipal Court Judge Jonathan Rosenbluth did not find probable cause for allegations filed against Theodore by Darlene Epps for aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a vehicle and possession of a firearm without a permit.

According to SNY.tv, the incident happened days after Keon Lawrence and Jamel Jackson were dismissed from the team on Feb. 12 by coach Kevin Willard for a violation of team rules and ''an ongoing pattern of conduct unbecoming of a representative of Seton Hall athletics.''

Theodore was quoted as saying that Willard had no choice in kicking the players off the team.

Epps, who is Lawrence's mother, alleged that Theodore and two other masked men showed up at her son's dormitory room armed with weapons after the game and confronted her son.

SNY.tv said that during the game Theodore's mother, Carol, was attacked in the stands by Epps' partner because of the player's comments after Lawrence was kicked off the team.

Epps told the judge her son telephoned her after the men showed up and she rushed over to the school and confronted the three. She told the judge at the probable cause hearing that Theodore jumped into his car and hit her in the hip.

The program was riddled with problems on and off the court last season, which led to the firing of coach Bobby Gonzalez despite a 19-win season.

That season ended with forward Herb Pope being was ejected from an NIT game for hitting a Texas Tech player below the belt, and Gonzalez picking up his seventh technical foul of the season.

And before last season started, Lawrence was involved in a traffic accident on the Garden State Parkway in which he was driving in the wrong direction, seriously injuring the driver of the other vehicle.

Lawrence was charged with assault by auto and driving with a suspended license, and was suspended for the first eight games of the season.

Gonzalez threw forward Robert Mitchell off the team late in the season and the former player was arrested shortly after that and charged with entering a house in South Orange and robbing eight people at gunpoint.
