Phillips paces Howard over Wilmington (Del.) 66-50

Mike Phillips turned in his first double-double of the year and Howard picked up its first victory with a 66-50 win over Division II Wilmington (Del.) Sunday in a nonconference showdown.

Phillips had 19 points and 12 rebounds - both season highs - while connecting on 8 of 10 shots from the field. The 6-foot-7 senior also blocked four shots.

Wilmington (0-6) - which counted the game as an exhibition - led 31-27 at halftime, but shot 21.9 percent (7 of 32) in the second half. Howard (1-5) hit 13 of 24 second-half shots to outscore the Wildcats 39-19 in the frame.

Calvin Thompson had 16 points - including makes on 8 of 9 free-throw attempts - while Alphonso Leary had 12 and Prince Okoroh had 10. Leary and Okoroh each had eight rebounds, as well.

James Pee led Wilmington with 17 points, while Herbert Dennis added five assists.
