FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) Paul Hewitt has been fired as George Mason's basketball coach after going 66-67 in four seasons.
Athletic director Brad Edwards said in a statement Monday there are ''high expectations'' for the team and ''a change was needed.''
The Patriots went 9-22 this season, 4-14 in the Atlantic 10, and lost their opening game in the conference tournament.
Hewitt was fired by Georgia Tech in 2011. He took the Yellow Jackets to the 2004 NCAA Tournament championship game, but mounting losses and dwindling attendance led to his departure there.

Less than two months later, he was hired by George Mason to replace Jim Larranaga, who led the Patriots to the Final Four in 2006 and was hired in 2011 by Miami.
