Pacquiao: Mayweather's earlier drug testing demand an 'alibi'

There are multiple reasons why the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight never happened up until this year. There was the issue of Bob Arum, with whom Mayweather did not want to negotiate. There were concerns from Pacquiao about being blood tested in the days leading up to the fight.

Ultimately, it’s clear in retrospect that Mayweather was fearful of Pacquiao and that is why he found a reason not to do the fight. Pacquiao said on HBO’s “Mayweather/Pacquiao At Last” that the drug testing demands were just an alibi by Floyd’s camp for not wanting to make the fight happen.

“The blood test thing … they just make that a reason … alibis not to make that fight happen,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao is correct in part. It’s still curious why he refused the drug testing, but Floyd was definitely coming up with reasons not to fight Manny. He waited until Pacquiao was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez and lost to Timothy Bradley (in a bad decision) before finally making the fight. And it really wasn’t until the two met face-to-face after a chance encounter at a Miami Heat game that the fight was finally set in motion.
