North Texas 53, Sam Houston St. 50

Chris Jones scored 14 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:06 remaining, as North Texas defeated Sam Houston State 53-50 on Saturday.

Jones' bucket put the Mean Green ahead 51-50, and Jacob Holmen added two free throws with 21.6 seconds left as North Texas (4-5) won despite putting up its lowest point total of the season.

Darius Gatson and Konner Tucker led Sam Houston State (3-7) with 10 points each. Gatson also had five assists.

The Bearkats outshot North Texas from the field (44 percent to 35 percent) and on 3-point attempts (39 percent to 18 percent). But the Mean Green enjoyed a 37-28 rebounding edge, including 18-7 on the offensive glass, and took advantage of 21 turnovers by Sam Houston State.

North Texas trailed 25-22 at halftime after going scoreless for 10 minutes while the Bearkats went on a 13-0 run.
