North Carolina Basketball: How Brandon Huffman's commitment impacts Tar Heels

A four-star center has verbally committed to North Carolina basketball, giving the Tar Heels size and depth.

North Carolina received its third commitment for the class of 2017 in big man Brandon Huffman on Monday morning. He joins combo guard Jalek Felton and shooting guard Andrew Platek in North Carolina’s 2017 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound four-star center is originally from Anchorage, Alaska but now plays for Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Huffman lacks the height for his position at the college level, but does have a sturdy frame and good strength that help him compensate against bigger opponents. He’s also a really good athlete. Those traits have helped him progress a great deal over the past couple of years.

Huffman’s improvement has been seen on both sides of the ball. He’s become a really good finisher down low, using his 230-pound frame to push defenders out of the way on his path to the goal. He’s also a very good defender, using that size to make it tough for would-be scorers to get down on the low blocks for easy buckets.

He’s still a bit raw on the offensive end of the court and will need to develop some better post moves. He would benefit from developing a better face-up game and continuing to work on his fundamentals.

Over the last two seasons, he’s gone from being virtually unknown to receiving offers from top Division I basketball programs. His hard work and dedication to the game have benefited him greatly and he now finds himself committed to one of the top basketball programs in the nation.

For the Tar Heels, Huffman will add size and depth to the roster. Although he isn’t an immediate game-changer, he’s a player who Roy Williams will look to to develop and utilize more as the years go by. As he progresses, it’s likely that his minutes and production will increase.

Huffman also held offers from Baylor, Connecticut, Indiana, Pittsburgh and Texas A&M, among others.

The Tar Heels are trying to add size to a team that lost All-American Brice Johnson after last season and prepares to lose seniors Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks after this season.

Williams and his staff are hoping to land a couple more big guys in the 2017 class, with their most coveted recruit being power forward P.J. Washington. Washington visited the UNC campus last weekend, before he makes official visits to Arizona and Texas in October.
