Until Kansas starts the regular season, the No. 7 Jayhawks don't seem to need Josh Selby.
Their prized freshman point guard remained in street clothes on the bench Tuesday night, awaiting clearance from the NCAA while Kansas handled Division II Emporia State 90-59.
It was the second straight lopsided victory in two exhibition games.
The Jayhawks open their regular season on Friday night against Longwood.
Markieff Morris scored 14 points and had nine rebounds and was one of five Jayhawks in double figures against the Hornets.
Marcus Morris, Thomas Robinson and Travis Releford each added 12 points and Tyshawn Taylor scored 10.
The Jayhawks hit 35 of 40 free throws, including 27 of 29 in the second half. Coach Bill Self tweaked his starting lineup, sending out Robinson, Markieff Morris, Tyrel Reed, Brady Morningstar and Releford to begin the game.
The 6-foot-9 Robinson dominated the inside early with two big dunks and a block in the first four minutes. Robinson finished with a team-high four blocks, but Self does not expect him to be that dominant against bigger competition.
''He's not that tall,'' Self said. ''When he plays against guys that are the same size or bigger that throw jump hooks, he's not going to block those shots.''
After 5 minutes, Self opted for a bigger lineup with Taylor, Marcus Morris, Mario Little and Elijah Johnson. With a big height advantage over the Hornets, whose tallest player was only 6-7, the Jayhawks scored 42 points in the paint.
''(The Hornets) were a small team so it made sense to play small,'' Markieff Morris said. ''Coach wanted to see if bigger guys could guard at different positions so he threw guys like Mario and Marcus at the three to see if they could guard out there.''
Emporia State managed to stay close for the first 10 minutes, but two baskets from Taylor sparked a 20-6 run late in the first half.
Taylor also helped fill the point guard position, a big question mark until Selby is available.
''I think Tyshawn's playing pretty good,'' Self said. ''He can make some great plays. But he can also throw it out of bounds under no pressure, too. But I think Tyshawn's played really well.''
Self was also impressed by Releford. A sophomore who redshirted last year, Releford hit five of six shots, including one of Kansas' three 3-pointers.
''It's very exciting to get back out on the court after sitting out a year and preparing for this,'' he said. ''It felt really good.''
Christian Jackson led Emporia State with 18 points.
''They covered a lot of ground with their athleticism,'' Jackson said. ''Inside, we're small, but coaches just told us to go out there and compete.''
