CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina honored late Tar Heels coach Dean Smith by running his Four Corners offense to open Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.
On his team's first possession, coach Roy Williams held up four fingers and his team spread the court before Marcus Paige found a cutting Brice Johnson for the basket.
Smith died two weeks ago, but this was UNC's first home game since. Smith was known for using the Four Corners to spread the floor and work the clock, which ultimately helped lead to the implementation of a shot clock in college basketball.
UNC also held a pregame moment of silence for Smith and will hold a public memorial service for him Sunday in the campus arena bearing his name.
