New Mexico uses late surge to beat Air Force 60-48
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) Sam Logwood scored a career-high 17 points and hit a crucial 3-pointer for New Mexico to help give the Lobos a 60-48 win over Air Force on Wednesday night.
Zach Kocur scored 12 points for the Falcons (8-8, 1-4 Mountain West), but no teammate reached double digits.
Although the Lobos (12-5, 4-1) never trailed in the second half, they could not extend the lead beyond five points until inside five minutes. A 7-0 run that began with five foul shots pushed New Mexico's lead to 49-40. But the streak ended when the Lobos' Devon Williams was called for a flagrant foul, which turned into a four-point Air Force possession, cutting the lead to 49-44 with 2:20 left.
On the ensuing possession, Logwood buried a baseline 3-pointer just before the shot clock ran out and the Falcons did not threaten thereafter.
Hugh Greenwood scored 11 for New Mexico while adding seven rebounds and six assists.
New Mexico raced out to a 9-2 lead on three straight 3-pointers, two from Greenwood, who missed his final eight shots. While the Lobos went through a 6-minute scoreless period, Air Force tied it at 13-13 after a 3-pointer from Kocur with 8:25 left in the first half. It was the first of four first-half ties.
The Falcons took their first lead of the game at 19-18 with 2:36 left, but New Mexico held a 22-20 lead at the break.
Air Force was able to stay in the game and make up for a lack of rebounding by forcing New Mexico into 10 turnovers at halftime. But the Lobos did a better job with the ball in the second with six turnovers. New Mexico had a 33-22 rebounding advantage despite a total of four boards from its four primary front court players.
