Troy Gillenwater scored 22 points Wednesday night and New Mexico State held off Idaho 74-69 in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Tyrone Watson and Hernst Laroche scored 12 points each for the Aggies (7-8). Tshilidzi Nephawe added 10 points.
Idaho was led by Kyle Barone with 22 points and Luiz Toledo with 14. Both had nine rebounds for the Vandals (6-6). There were 17 lead changes and Gillenwater had a basket and three free throws in the final 1:06 as the Aggies held on.
Idaho held a slim 31-29 halftime lead but both teams shot well in the second half. The Aggies made 63 percent of their shots and the Vandals converted 54 percent from outside after the break.
