Navy tops VMI 84-66

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) Tillman Dunbar scored 26 points, Kevin Alter scored 14, and Navy easily beat VMI 84-66 on Tuesday night.

Dunbar shot 8 of 10 from the field and hit 10 of 15 free throws. Zach Fong scored 14 and the Midshipmen (3-8) outrebounded the Keydets 44-29. Brandon Venturini grabbed 10 rebounds and made eight assists.

QJ Peterson led VMI (4-6) with 23 points, Julian Eleby scored 16, and Jordan Weethee 14.

Navy opened with a 10-3 run in which Dunbar scored five points, then pulled ahead 20-10 after a 10-4 run. Alter hit 3 of 4 3-pointers, and the Midshipmen outrebounded the Keydets 22-11 and led 46-43 at halftime.

Peterson pulled VMI within three, 48-45, after hitting two free throws, but Navy ripped a 10-4 run in which Dunbar scored seven points and led 58-49 early in the second half. Navy finished with a 13-2 run in the final 4 minutes.
