A North Carolina community college basketball player died after he collapsed while playing in a game Saturday, officials said.

Raymond Dunn, a 6-foot-4 sophomore forward for Vance Granville, collapsed on the court near the end of the first half of a game against Guilford Tech, Vance Granville President Randy Parker said.

Dunn was taken to nearby Maria Parham Medical Center, where nursing supervisor Shannon Anderson said he was pronounced dead Saturday.

Kevin Gerity with the North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy was conducted Sunday, but the results were not yet available.

Dunn was named a Player of the Week in January by the National Junior College Athletic Association after two impressive performances including a career-high 52-point game.

He played high school ball for Norlina Christian School, and Parker said Dunn was being recruited by several colleges.

"We're just trying to help faculty, staff and especially the family through the grieving process,'' Parker said Sunday.
