Michigan State Basketball: After Northeastern loss, is it time to panic?

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:13 p.m. ET

After losing to Northeastern at home on Sunday, is it time for Michigan State basketball to hit the panic button?

After a long first couple of months of the Michigan State basketball season, players are already showing signs of fatigue. The Spartans traveled more than probably any other team in the country and played a grueling schedule against Arizona, Duke, Kentucky, Baylor and Wichita State.

Despite the tough stretch, Michigan State is learning more about itself and it will have even more to work on after Sunday night’s loss to Northeastern at home. The Spartans lost by eight after struggling to pull away all game long.

There was one point in the game when Michigan State was up 51-45 and it looked like the Spartans were just going to run away with it, but the lead was grabbed right back by Northeastern.

Michigan State falls to 7-5 on the season with one game left in non-conference action. Is it time for the Spartans to panic?

My answer right now is no. While it’s definitely concerning to see this team lose to a squad like Northeastern, it’s obvious what the issues are. Not having Miles Bridges is causing some problems for the Spartans both in the post and on offense. Combine that with Eron Harris not playing all that well, the team missing guys like Ben Carter and Gavin Schilling and playing down to opponents and it leads to losses like this.

A loss like this usually creates a little panic, but the Spartans lost to Texas Southern at home two years ago and still made the Final Four. No panic just yet, but if Michigan State can’t learn from this and it drops even more games, then yes, then it will be time to panic.

It’s more of a time to hit the reset button for Tom Izzo.
