Miami (Ohio)-Kansas Preview
With Big 12 play still more than a week away, Kansas coach Bill Self has plenty of time to determine what to do with his lineup.
His third-ranked Jayhawks will try to extend the nation's longest home win streak to 67 games Sunday when they play Miami (Ohio).
Self benched leading scorer Marcus Morris for Wednesday's 82-57 rout of Texas-Arlington. Morris finished with 13 points and six rebounds as a reserve in his first action since being ejected from a 78-63 win at California on Dec. 22 for throwing an elbow at an opponent.
Thomas Robinson took advantage of his first start with a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, earning a compliment from Self as the team's best post player.
"We have a good team so if Marcus comes off the bench, or if I come off the bench, I feel like it is going to be the same result," Robinson said. "I just keep doing what coach asks of me for now, and let this play out."
Self is unsure what to make of his team, which started 14-0 last season. Kansas (12-0) does not open conference play until Jan. 12 at Iowa State.
"The thing that really concerns me is who is our best players?" Self said. "I have no idea. It's different night to night."
The coach said that he will not reveal Sunday's lineup until game-time.
Freshman superstar Josh Selby had two points on 1-of-9 shooting in his first start after totaling 39 points in two games off the bench. Elijah Johnson started at point guard for Tyshawn Taylor, who had missed several practices because of trouble traveling back from his New Jersey home due a blizzard in the Northeast.
"You don't get better unless everybody is in one accord and one mindset about what is important," Self said. "We don't get that. Josh didn't shoot the ball at all tonight, which is fine, but still the majority of the time the ball is not in his hands so you have to play other parts."
The Jayhawks continue to lead the nation in field-goal percentage at 53.2 percent. Morris leads all Big 12 players at 60.2 percent.
Kansas has not lost at Allen Fieldhouse since a 61-60 loss to Massachusetts on Dec. 13, 2008.
The Jayhawks will be facing an opponent that likely won't be intimidated. Miami (5-8) has played one of the nation's toughest schedules, with Sunday's game its fifth against the seven remaining unbeaten Division I squads.
The RedHawks fell 79-45 at No. 1 Duke on Nov. 16, 77-56 to then-No. 18 San Diego State on Nov. 26, 66-45 at then-No. 3 Ohio State on Dec. 1 and 64-48 to Cincinnati on Dec. 21.
Miami dropped to 0-5 on the road with Thursday's 83-72 loss at Belmont. Nick Winbush scored 19 points and Antonio Ballard added 18 for the RedHawks, who never recovered after falling behind by 15 at halftime.
