Hasaan Powell scored a career-high 27 points, helping Mercy College snap a 43-game losing streak with an 89-88 win over New York Institute of Technology on Monday night.

Mercy College's win was its first since an 80-64 victory over Molloy College on Feb. 16, 2008, ending the longest current losing slide in Division II.

Bryan Van Cott added a season-high 21 points for the Mavericks (1-13, 1-6 East Coast Conference), who avoided setting a new D-II record for losses.

The record still stands at 46 losses in a row by two separate teams - Olivet, whose streak went from Feb. 21, 1959 to Dec. 4, 1961, and by Southwest Minnesota State from Dec. 11, 1971 to Dec. 1, 1973.

The Bears (6-7, 3-3) led 81-80 late in the game, but Manny Garcia's 3 and Powell's layup with less than 2 minutes remaining gave Mercy College a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
