Diego Kapelan and Patrick Richard scored 14 points each and C.J. Collins added 13 to lift top-seed McNeese State to a 61-54 decision over No. 8 seed Nicholls State in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament on Wednesday night.
McNeese (20-10) led 51-35 with six minutes to play before having to withstand a 14-0 run by Nicholls, which hit four 3-pointers during the run and cut the lead to 51-49 with 2:43 left.
McNeese then closed the game on a 10-5 run, getting a key 15-foot jumper from Collins with 50 seconds to play to extend the Cowboys' lead to 55-49.
Anatoly Bose led Nicholls (14-14) with 25 points. Chris Talkington added 10 points off the bench for the Colonels, who were 6 of 17 on 3-pointers in the second half.
