McGlynn scores 15, Rhode Island beats American U, 65-42

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) Four McGlynn scored 15 points in his debut for Rhode Island and Jared Terrell added 14 more to help the Rams beat American 65-42 Friday night in the season opener for both schools.

McGlynn, a graduate transfer from Towson, made 5 of 7 field goals, including four second-half 3-pointers. Hassan Martin finished with 10 points and three steals.

Alex Paquin's layup with 7:33 left in the first half cut American's deficit to 22-20 but the Eagles missed their final seven field goal attempts and committed five turnovers as Rhode Island closed the half on a 14-3 run.

Charlie Jones hit a jumper with 12:32 left to pull American within seven, 44-37, but the Eagles wouldn't make another field goal and Rhode Island closed the game with a 21-5 run.

American shot just 35 percent (16 of 46) from the field, including 2 of 14 from 3-point range.
