Donovan Kates scored eight of his 10 points during Manhattan's go-ahead run in a 62-48 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, in the season opener for both teams.

The Jaspers led 28-27 at halftime, but NJIT took a 43-39 advantage on Isaiah Wilkerson's layup with 7:39 remaining. Manhattan then outscored the Highlanders 10-0, capped by Kates' free throws with 4:58 to go. Kates had two 3-pointers during the run.

NJIT brought it within five, 53-48, with 3:39 left, but Manhattan ended the game with 11 unanswered points.

George Beamon led the Jaspers with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Roberto Colonette added 11 points.

Manhattan, which played 12 players, outscored the Highlanders 22-2 off the bench in coach Steve Masiello's first win. Masiello served as an assistant with Louisville after serving as an assistant with the Jaspers from 2001-05.

Wilkerson led NJIT with 23 points.
