Long Beach St. fends off San Francisco St. 74-64

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) Mike Caffey scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half, including a pair of big 3-pointers late in the game as Long Beach State defeated San Francisco State 74-64 on Saturday night.

The 49ers even their record at 1-1. The game was an exhibition for Division II San Francisco State.

The Gators were rallying late in the game, closing to 64-60 after an 8-2. Caffey hit two straight 3s for a 70-62 lead, then fed McKay LaSalle who hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put Long Beach up 12 with 1:41 left.

David Samuels led Long Beach with 14 points, LaSalle and Branford Jones added 12 each.

The Gators had five players score in double figures, led by Udun Osakue who fouled out in the final two minutes with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Long Beach shot 53.7 percent from the floor, including 10 of 18 3-pointers.
