Lauren Hill dies from brain cancer
By Steve DelVecchio
Lauren Hill, the Mount St. Joseph basketball player who had a rare form of brain cancer called DIPG, has passed away. She was 19.
Hill’s story was one of the most inspirational you will ever read. She lived out her dream of playing college basketball despite knowing she did not have very long to live. Hill first appeared in a game in early November and scored the first two points of the NCAA season. The game had been pushed up to assure that Lauren would be well enough to play, and she went on to play in four games during the season.
As WGME notes, Hill helped raise more than $1.5 million for DIPG research with the group The Cure Starts Now. The way she maintained high spirits while battling her deadly disease was nothing shy of remarkable.
Devon Still, a Cincinnati Bengals lineman whose daughter was diagnosed with pediatric cancer, paid tribute to hill with his eyeblack during a game last season.
Our thoughts are with those close to Lauren.
