Jayhawks Well Represented in Preseason All-Big 12 Awards
The Big 12 announced their Preseason All-Big 12 Awards as voted by coaches and veteran Kansas basketball guard Frank Mason and junior guard Devonté Graham were both named to the first team. They were joined on the first team by Johnathan Motley of Baylor, Monté Morris of Iowa State and Jawun Evans of Oklahoma State.
Mason was on the 2016 all-conference second team and Graham was voted the Most Outstanding Player in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship. Note that coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
After being considered the top recruit in the nation, Josh Jackson was named the preseason freshman of the year. While only a first team was announced, Jackson also earned honorable mention meaning he received votes for the first team. In addition, he was a McDonald’s All-American and has played on numerous USA Basketball national teams.
Coach Bill Self said “It’s a good first team there’s no question, but if you say that to Frank and Devonte’ they’ll likely go, ‘Well, what does that mean, coach? It doesn’t mean anything.’”
Other conference honors include Monté Morris being selected as preseason player of the year and Manu Lecomte of Baylor as preseason newcomer of the year. This is only the second time in conference history a player from Iowa State has been named preseason player of the year.
Joining Jackson on the honorable mention list are Jordan Woodard of Oklahoma, Jarrett Allen of Texas along with Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles Jr. of West Virginia. As only a first team is announced in the preseason, this could be considered a second team.
The Big 12 will holds its annual media day on Tuesday, October 25 at Sprint Center in Kansas City. Coaches will also rank conference teams and that preseason poll will be announced on Thursday, October 13.
