Frank Gaines scored 29 points and Trey McCorkle had a double-double to lead IPFW to a season-opening 83-72 victory over Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday.
McCorkle had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Jason Smeathers added 10 points for the Mastodons. Jonny Marlin had nine assists.
In their first game as a Division I program, the Mavericks placed four players in double figures: C.J. Carter with 18, Mitch Albers with 15, Bill Freeman with 14 and Alex Welhouse with 13. Albers added six assists.
IPFW bolted to a 9-0 edge and led 41-31 at halftime. The lead maximized at 76-54 on a 3-pointer by Joe Edwards with 5:34 to play.

Nebraska-Omaha, in its first year as a reclassifying Division I school, will join IPFW in the Summit League.
