Iona wins 97-81, withstands Rider's 2nd half push

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) Sean Armand had 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists and A.J. English had 25 points to lead Iona in a 97-81 victory over Rider.

The Gaels (20-9, 17-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) opened with a 13-0 run, extended to 25-7 in the first eight minutes. The Broncs (13-16, 9-11) closed the gap to 64-61 with 11:56 to go, and Iona responded with eleven straight points and cruised from there.

Isaiah Williams had 17 points and Tre Bowman scored 13. Armand, English and Williams were each 3 of 6 from 3-point range.

Daniel Stewart had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Anthony Myles scored 19, and Jimmie Taylor and Shawn Valentine had 14 points apiece for the Broncs

Rider gets the No. 8 seed in the MAAC tournament and will face No. 9 Monmouth on Thursday. As the No. 1 seed, Iona will await the winner on Saturday.
