Miklos Szabo scored 22 points and Charles Jenkins added 21 as Hofstra used inside muscle to defeat Towson 84-64 on Saturday in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. Szabo, a 6-foot-9 senior from Hungary, made 11 of 14 shots for the Pride (5-3, 1-0), who had a 42-26 scoring edge in the paint against the Tigers (2-4, 0-1), including 34-16 in the second half. Szabo grabbed eight rebounds. Hofstra, which led 38-27 at halftime, used a 17-5 run to turn a 14-point lead with 11:47 remaining in the game into a 78-52 bulge with 5:55 left. Szabo scored six of his points during the run on two layups and a jumper. Calvin Lee scored 14 points for Towson, including 10 in the first half. Szabo put Hofstra ahead to stay on a layup that made it 17-15 with 9:29 left until halftime.
