HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) John Brown scored 27 points and High Point defeated Virginia Military 70-67 as the Panthers stretched their winning streak to five games on Wednesday night.

The Panthers (15-13, 11-4 Big South) led by 14 at the half but VMI chipped away and trailed by just three with less than 2 minutes to play. The Keydets (17-11, 10-5) missed three 3-pointers in the final minute and Trey Chapman's two free throws weren't enough to take the lead.

Brown's 12th point of the game made him the first player in conference history to surpass 1,000 points before the end of his sophomore year. He shot 12 of 18 from the floor and added a team-high 10 rebounds. Devante Wallace scored 16 points for the Panthers, who secured sole possession of first place in the North Division of the Big South Conference.

D.J. Covington led the Keydets with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
