Hawaii overcame an ugly start to the second half and pulled away to win its season opener 65-48 over Southern Utah on Friday night in the 46th annual Rainbow Classic. The Warriors went more than 9:30 without a field goal early in the second half, watching a 10-point lead turn into a one-point deficit as Southern Utah grabbed its first lead. But a 17-6 run over 5 1/2 minutes, thanks in large part to Roderick Fleming?s nine points in that stretch, re-established Hawaii?s double-digit cushion. Fleming, a senior forward who was an all-Western Athletic Conference second-team performer last season, finished with game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Providence transfer Dwain Williams scored 16 points in his debut with Hawaii. Senior guard Davis Barker led Southern Utah with 14 points.
